Join FAVS for our first farm 'walk and talk' of the year.🐄
This session will be focusing on cow rectal palpation and we'll be using the models in the LAHF to practice on.
This practical is aimed at all years and courses, with the aim of giving everyone a better understanding of how to do rectal palpations safely.
PPE is required 🥾. Waterproof tops and trousers as well as wellies. Any issues with PPE? Please email sufavs@rvc.ac.uk and we'll help where we can!
The learning outcomes for this session are:
- Describe the appropriate preparation, restraint, PPE and safety considerations required to perform a bovine rectal examination, including measures to minimise stress and injury to the animal.
- Demonstrate a safe and systematic approach to performing a bovine rectal examination, using appropriate technique and recognising when to stop.
- Identify and palpate key reproductive structures, including the cervix, uterine body, uterine horns and ovaries.
- Describe the normal anatomical position, size, consistency and palpable characteristics of the bovine reproductive tract.
