"Recently, I had the chance to attend the RCVS MMI conference, and it genuinely left me feeling encouraged about where our profession is heading. As someone whose role often involves looking out for student wellbeing during nights out and social events, I see firsthand how easily stress, anxiety, or unexpected mental health moments can surface. It’s a reminder that even in fun, busy environments, people can be carrying a lot beneath the surface, and that having support in place really matters.
What stood out to me at the conference was how open and hopeful the conversation around mental health in the veterinary and wider STEM professions has become. There was a real honesty in the way speakers talked about challenges, and an equally strong commitment to creating safer, healthier cultures for students and professionals alike. It was reassuring to see that the issues we’re tackling at RVC: making events safer, checking in on each other, building systems that protect wellbeing, are part of a much bigger, profession-wide effort.
Coming away from the event, I felt proud of the work we do within the SU to support students on nights out, and motivated to keep strengthening our approach. Taking care of each other isn’t just a campus priority, it’s becoming a cornerstone of the veterinary community. It is something I’m genuinely grateful to be part of, and I am so thankful for the SU for providing me with this opportunity!"
