RVCSU Environment

Hi I'm Quentin, Environment Officer for your Students' Union. I'm currently in year 3 of the BVetMed course. I’ve been interested in environmental issues for many years and I’m really pleased to be able to work with students and staff at RVC to try to make a positive impact on our environment. Please join our Facebook page “RVC SU Environment", or email me directly if you want to get involved or have any suggestions (suenvironment@rvc.ac.uk)

College and SU both commit to becoming carbon neutral.

Last December the College and our SU took an historic step by both signing the EAUC (part of the United Nations) letter to commit us to becoming carbon neutral by 2030. Obviously there is a lot of work to do, and as an SU we are beginning to set out policy in order that we achieve this ambitious target. “Carbon neutral" can be broken down into three scopes:

1. Scope 1: direct emissions (e.g. oil-fired boilers or heaters)

2. Scope 2: emissions from gas and electricity suppliers

3. Scope 3: indirect emissions relating to our value chain (e.g. the food we buy)

Our commitment is to become carbon neutral in scopes one and two, and to strive towards scope 3.

RVCSCCC

The Student Climate Change Committee formed earlier this academic year with the aim of acting as a platform for students to engage in environmental issues around the College. We have since met twice, and made progress on many initiatives including green travel, sustainable food, and planting trees. Meeting times will be made public with a week’s notice, and we usually get together at the bar for a relaxed atmosphere!

Community engagement

I have recently started to get involved with community engagement initiatives in order to further our relationships with those living around our Hawkshead Campus. This relationship is key as it enables us to help each other to improve our environment for the benefit of everyone!

Composting

I take a keen interest in composting – words I never thought would leave my mouth – but getting more students composting has become a target for me. We have started by advertising the environmental benefits of disposing of your food waste responsibly and have recently been giving away compost bins to students living in Potters Bar. I’d like to make it easier for more students to compost their food waste so watch this space!
